Minnesota’s Fifth Senate District encompasses the heart of the Mesabi Iron Range and a large region stretching to just north of Duluth. Cities include Hibbing, Chisholm, Buhl, Mt. Iron, Virginia, Eveleth, Gilbert, Aurora, Biwabik, Floodwood, Cotton, Cherry, several townships north of Duluth, the Side Lake area, Hoyt Lakes and many other nearby townships and locations.

Historically, iron mining has dominated our region’s economy. Mining remains one of our vital industries, but the area seeks to expand its economic and job base. The Iron Range DFL supports these efforts by standing up for economic development projects to bring new technologies and new jobs to the area, replacing those lost over the years. We also support education and job retraining to help young people, current and older workers learn the skills they need to get jobs and provide for their families. The Iron Range DFL believes in a future for our region where no one has to move away to be successful and that opportunity can and should reach every part of our state.

Education helped make our region great. For decades, public schools in the fifth district helped the sons and daughters of working people become skilled professionals and trades people, artists and thinkers, and some of the greatest leaders in the history of our state and nation. Because of changing population trends, school districts in the fifth district have battled with declining enrollment and unfair changes to the state’s education funding system. The Iron Range DFL believes in the strong tradition of our region’s schools, recognizing past greatness and future potential. We fight not just for funding, but fairness for our rural northeastern Minnesota schools.

The medical community is a major part of the fifth district economy. The Iron Range DFL firmly believes that access to basic health care for working families, children and retirees is a right, not a privilege for those who can afford the inflated prices of our current system.

Our region is known for its outdoor splendor, from shimmering lakes to beautiful forests. We stand up for wise use and long term conservation of our natural resources so that our great outdoors is preserved for centuries to come.
